| Review | Rice is the second of the box set 'Red Rice', and is also available seperatly under the CD code above. This album is the more traditional of the two, essentially being Liza, Saul, Ed Boyd and Lucy/Eleanor on backing Vocals, plus the Fontenots singing away on a couple of tunes.
It is a very comprehensive example of traditional English folk, from the amazing version of 'The Snow it Melts the Soonest' to the upbeat 'Herring Song'. The talents of Liza, Saul & Ed really do come to the forefront - precise tunes laid down with gallons of talent. Rice is a very good comparison to Red, showing the different sides of Liza's music. After Heat Light & Sound, it was the next venture for the band, and reviews across the world were stunning. It managed to get the Observers 'Album of the Week', and reviews made it into most of the high street mags - with Liza being touted as 'folk-babe', and as the person who'd drag English Folk music kicking and screaming into the 21st Century. Whether that's your opinion or not is up to you, but there are certainly parts of both albums that make you sit up and take notice. Talent like this is hard to find ... | |
