| Review | Way back in the mists of '98, Liza started work on her next release - which was to become Angels and Cigarettes. Some of the first songs had their initial public appearance on the mainstage at Glastonbury 1999 with Heather Macleod & Lucy Adams singing backing vocals, and Willy Molleson (Ben & Conrad’s brother, one of the many, bands Green Juice, Kith & Kin) playing drums along with Sam. Also, a couple of new faces appeared on the scene ; James Mackintosh (Mouth Music, Shooglenifty) and Quee Macarthur (Mouth Music, now Shooglenifty) played on the first demo of the album.
After being snapped up by Warner Brothers (quite a startlingly large jump from the home of Topic), Liza went into it full tilt, and created an album that was far more contempary than any of her previous offerings. Full string sections, electronic programming on a few of the songs, lots and lots of different instruments & session musicians (see the listing below!). Liza wrote all of the songs apart from their rendition of Wellers 'WildWood'. The album has done pretty well across the water in the US, and was helped by extensive tours over there by both Waterson:Carthy, The EC Band & lots of interviews & TV appearances. The album shows a completly different side to Eliza. Both lyrically & muscially, she's put a lot more of herself into the music - experimenting with different styles and incorperating parts of English Folk music into the songs - merging the best of both worlds and creating something new. A rather unique and special album - not really like anything that's been released before! Guest musicians : BJ Cole (pedal steel), Van Dyke Parks (arranged Fuse and The Company of Men, played piano on Perfect), the Mondriaan String Quartet (a lovely orchestra), Leland Sklar (bass, Van Dyke Parks band, loads of other stuff). | |
