So... how did Eliza get to where she is today? What projects she been in? Who's she worked with? Well, many of the questions can be answered by searching through the database of band members and albums, but in Ms Carthys very own (slightly edited) words :

To start with, there was me and Nancy Kerr, (2 albums: Eliza Carthy & Nancy Kerr, 1993, Shape of Scrape, 1995).Also there was the family: Norma, Lal, Mike and Rachel Waterson (Rachel in original Blue Murder), Martin Carthy (I call him Daddy,or Dr.Dad,or "Sir"), Maria Gilhooley (with Lal, mother and me as The Waterdaughters, no album, but one track on re-released Topic album "A True Hearted Girl"). After W:C came work with the Chipolatas as 'King Ligger and the Bathing Boys' with the Chips, Barn, Jock Tyldesley, Will McPhee from Clan McPeake, Judy Wright from the Kitchen Girls and the Boat Band, Gareth Turner from Little Johnny England, Simon Care from E2, various guests. No recordings but loads of live festival stuff from 1991 until it became the Chipolata 5 about 5 years ago. Street shows and stuff.

Heat Light and Sound 1996, (Hazel Wrigley from the Wrigley sisters, Martin Ellison, Olly Knight, Dylan Clarke from La Cucina and Shine, etc.). Asked Sam Thomas to be drummer forever and ever. Met Saul Rose in 1994 ish, asked him to be in a band with me and Nancy, Kings of Calicutt as 3-piece. Recorded a Radio 2 session for Jim Lloyd and appeared on Shape of Scrape with Ian Carr playing guitar. Did something for Evolving Tradition CDs (Mrs.Casey Music). Dan Plews joined in 1995, appeared as a ceilidh band for a bit, Maclaine Colston joined after guesting on second Evolving Trad CD, James Fagan (bouzouki) appeared live winter 1996; Barn joined after that (played Sidmouth1997), Rory who’s surname I can’t remember but who is lovely except he didn’t stay very long as drummer, Andi Wells just after, but Nancy also left before we recorded, end of 97. Damn shame. Guests on that album were producer John McCusker (Battlefield Band, Kate Rusby Band) and Conrad Ivitsky (Shooglenifty, Kith and Kin).

1998, Red Rice. Asked Martin Green to join the electric band and fancied doing something more acoustic for the second CD so asked Saul to do that with me and Ed Boyd. Ed was the only musician apart from me that played on both albums(ish). Did Red Rice the track in Sowerby Bridge six months before, remixed version with Shack and Paul in the studio in Ewloe and Niall Macaulay in Edinburgh. Lucy Adams (Chris Coe and Johnny Adams’ daughter, see Radio 3 "World on your Street" website) sang on Red and clogged on Rice. Rory Macleod guested on Red Rice playing harmonica and trombone. Ed Boyd came to the studio with the ‘flu and had egg sandwiches thrown at him for no good reason. Niall Macaulay produced, Olly Knight played screamy electric guitar which I think is ace and Sam thinks is funny. Guests also Andy Thorburn (piano keyboard, loads of lovely Scottish bands like Eat the Seats, and commissions from Celtic Connections) and Ben Ivitsky (made his mark in the tomcat sense by making a stupid noise at the end of Red

Started on Angel and Cigarettes beginning of 98, appeared on mainstage Glastonbury 1999 with Heather Macleod singing BVs with Lucy Adams and Willy Molleson (Ben & Conrad’s brother, one of the many, bands Green Juice, Kith & Kin) playing drums along with Sam. James Mackintosh (Mouth Music, Shooglenifty) and Quee Macarthur (Mouth Music, now Shooglenifty) played on first demo.

Guest musicians on A&C: BJ Cole (pedal steel), Van Dyke Parks (arranged Fuse and The Company of Men, played piano on Perfect), the Mondriaan String Quartet, a lovely orchestra, Leland Sklar (bass, Van Dyke Parks band, loads of stuff).

Live lineup until WOMAD Las Palmas, November 2001: Eliza Carthy, Willy Molleson, Heather Macleod, Barnaby Stradling, Martin Green, Sarah Roberts (guitar, BVs, plays with Liz Docherty and other lovely people). Toured America 2001 to fabulous acclaim and riches, appeared on the Conan O’Brian show on NBC ( "You’re a bad man, Conan", Terence & Phillip).

Support tours Oysterband, Billy Bragg and the Blokes, Joan Baez.
